The Medical Science Liaisons (MSL) Manager is responsible for leading and managing the performance of a team of Medical Science Liaisons. The manager provides regional strategic leadership and appropriately leverages the MSL’s scientific and clinical expertise to ensure mutually agreeable interactions with scientific experts. The manager will also build and maintain strong working relationships with internal and external business partners specific to the therapeutic area.
The MSL manager is responsible for leading and managing the performance of a team of Medical Science Liaisons. The manager provides regional strategic leadership and appropriately leverages the MSL’s scientific and clinical expertise to ensure mutually agreeable interactions with scientific experts. The manager also capitalizes on collated and distilled field insights, identify unmet needs, and leads others to develop new content solutions. Will work broadly, and cross-functionally, to accomplish these goals; inclusive of leading field medical integration with integrated evidence generation and the TA / brands omnichannel strategy.
Manage the performance and development of team members
Hold team members accountable to all performance expectations
Develop personnel through scheduled interactions, including field visits
Recruit and staff open positions
Contribute to succession planning and talent development decisions
Ensure appropriate diversity and inclusion efforts being made in the development of team dynamic
Evaluate internal and external feedback on team performance, including that from Scientific Experts
Business Partner Interface
Partner effectively with all internal medical, development, and commercial partners across therapeutic area
Collaborate (proactively and reactively) with other MSL leadership across the enterprise
Support medical affairs staffing at congresses and ensure clinical insights learned are communicated back into Lilly appropriately
Partner within the Canadian MSL Organization (across therapeutic areas and business units) and with the Global Medical Affairs Office (GMAO) to share best practices and lead process optimization to create operational efficiencies, which drive effectiveness.
Strategy Development and Execution
Develop and implement regional field medical strategies aligned with both business unit and medical affairs strategies in partnership with cross-functional colleagues, including CRS/CRPs and other functions responsible for global content creation
Assure field medical implementation of business unit and medical affairs priorities and initiatives
Develop field medical business plan and participate in higher-level business planning process to ensure the medical resource planning is aligned with business unit objectives
Lead the collection interpretation, and distillation of MSL insights. Anticipate needs and identify gaps to influence actions that address unmet medical needs.
Be accountable for capturing the impact and outcome of field medical “insights to action”.
Hold internal cross-functional colleagues accountable for timely delivery of commitments, through influence and rigorous process management.
Lead activities which facilitate the broad, internal communication of distilled field insights through: quarterly Clinical Insight deep dives, and other ad hoc forums which enable MSL teams to share unmet need and solutions.
Support MSL onboarding for new staff in partnership with CRS/CRPs and MSL SMEs
Oversee quality, compliance, accountability, and effectiveness of team
Ensure alignment with all applicable policies, laws, regulations, and guidelines
Identify and lead process improvement initiatives
Ensure appropriate documentation processes are employed
Analyze all data on MSL activities to improve MSL performance
Responsible for reporting the impact / execution of MSL scientific strategy
Lead workshops that improve MSL interpersonal and scientific communication skills
Manage and monitor all team finance and HR-related issues appropriately
Minimum Qualification Requirements:
Advanced degree in health sciences (PharmD, M.D., Ph.D. in a medically related field) required with 2-3 years of relevant clinical or therapeutic area experience desired. Masters or Bachelors level degree in health sciences (RN, RPh, PA, Certified Diabetes Educator, NP, etc.) considered if 5 or more years clinical and/or medical information experience in relevant therapeutic area is present.
Five or more years experience in pharmaceutical industry required
Familiarity/experience with regulated environments and compliance oversight is required
Demonstrated ability to partner, influence, and work successfully within and across BUs, functions, and across levels of leadership.
Demonstrated broad strategic thinking and execution excellence. Experience in setting scientific strategy for field based organization.
Demonstrated success with managing and developing people, preferably field based employees.
Strong business acumen. Working knowledge of Lilly enterprise and systems.
Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment and ability to incorporate new learning into real time solutions (agile, adaptable, results orientated)
Other Information/Additional Preferences:
Clinical Trial and/or drug development experience is preferred
Experience in field-based environments strongly recommended
Familiarity with the academic community and the medical research and medical education process highly valued
Strong interpersonal skills and relevant experience in building professional relationships and networking
Significant experience in motivating people, creating positive team experiences, and coaching/developing technical personnel highly recommended
Demonstrated leadership and the ability to achieve results through people
Demonstrated learning agility for acquiring technical knowledge; able to provide effective feedback on the quality of verbal and written technical communications and documentation by personnel, and provide direction to technical coaches and team
Demonstrated decision making: ability to problem solve and develop and apply creative solutions and implement those decisions effectively
Effective verbal and written communication skills
This position is field-based with the specific location determined according to business need. The position is based from a home office, inclusive of those individuals located in the Toronto area. Managers work on a regular basis in the field accompanying their Medical Liaisons on field visits and attending scientific congresses. Anticipated travel requirements are 50-70% or higher, depending on specific needs of the therapeutic area, and include overnight travel commitments as well as potential periodic weekend commitments.
