Eli Lilly has achieved unprecedented R&D productivity with the possibility to launch 20 new medicines in a 10-year period. To sustain the future pipeline, Lilly is expanding efforts to access a constant stream of external innovation, which will fuel its elite discovery and development engines.

We are seeking an individual to build our Scientific Search and Evaluate team in San Francisco. Within this role, you will maximize your leadership at the intersection of Lilly’s industry leading venture capital strategy and the highly innovative San Francisco innovation ecosystem. By strategically placing you at the crossroads of these two fast paced areas, you will become an innovation leader contributing to Lilly's position as a forerunner in the global healthcare sector.

This role will provide the unique chance to develop and implement a west coast strategy. Your unique skillset will be utilized to build-out and lead the local New Ventures team. Key aspects of this strategy will involve clarifying how Lilly best partners with key innovation sources in the immediate area including – venture capital partners, biotech’s, and universities. The role will also act as the key partner for our largest and most strategic venture capital funds on the coast. You will work cross functionally with our Lilly Venture Laboratories to investigate and drive expansion.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Thorough, objective scientific assessment of novel external innovation opportunities including analysis of patents, scientific literature, and be able to lead probing discussions with internal Lilly scientists to identify key issues and have the appropriate expertise to facilitate impactful solutions.
  • Building long-term positive relationships with our key venture fund partners and internal peers and partners.
  • Coordinating, triaging, and supervising a portfolio of probable external projects; take a leadership role in communicating the value of the portfolio to internal partners, prioritizing avenues that have a strategic fit to Lilly.
  • Leadership of interactions with selected external organizations; represent Lilly strategies and needs to external organizations.
  • Execution of key projects when working with external groups including design and oversight of key de-risking experiments.
  • Mapping of the external competitive landscape and cultivating platforms for growth in new-to-Lilly indications or ground-breaking technologies that could change treatment paradigms.
  • Work closely with peers in Indianapolis, Boston, Europe, and Japan to ensure coordination of efforts and consistent communications to senior leadership.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in a subject area relevant to the pharmaceutical industry e.g., Biochemistry, Chemistry, Pharmacology, Physiology, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology or Genetics
  • 5+ years of experience in the biopharmaceutical industry or related fields (life sciences VC, life science technology transfer, etc.) with a preference for additional experience working with small life science companies and venture capital firms.

Additional Skills and Preference:

  • The position will be based in the California/San Francisco area, and ideally you will have an established broad network in the area.
  • Strong scientific pedigree as evidenced by publications, patents, presentations
  • Demonstrated expertise in biopharmaceutical drug discovery including familiarity with patents and trends shaping pharmaceutical innovation and business. Cross-functional knowledge of predominant drug discovery fields.
  • Demonstrated knowledge across several disease areas relevant to Lilly’s business.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the biotech and academic ecosystem with strong preference for direct experience in San Francisco.
  • Solid understanding of emerging technologies, knowledge of drug discovery processes and stages of projects and external deal structures.
  • Strong organizational skills, capacity multitask efficiently and prioritize quickly; problem-solving and project management skills.
  • Experience of working in a complex global matrix environment as well as leading and maximizing the matrix.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and negotiation skills and willingness and ability to take care of disharmony.
  • Consistent track record of presenting information on an international level.
  • Strong database, informatics, and digital literacy.
