The Medicines Development Unit plays a meaningful role in progressing the Lilly pipeline and driving the delivery of medicines from the time molecules leave the scientific research environment through product launch. Medicines Development IDS (Information and Digital Solutions) is a strategic function that supports our company’s goal of growing the value of our medical innovation and accelerating our launch timelines. We do this by providing technical leadership on groundbreaking programs (such as Decentralized Clinical Trials, Design Hub Analytics, Regulatory Information Management, Clinical Trial Supply Chain Management, etc) and by introducing new digital solutions (automation, insights, user experience) in every aspect of how work gets done in taking molecules from the research labs all the way to commercial launch activities.

Within MD IDS, the Product Delivery application portfolio contains solutions that are leveraged by our business partners to meet the critical need to supply clinical trial products to patients worldwide. That portfolio continues to evolve to meet the ever-increasing business demands, in support of a growing Lilly medicines development pipeline. 

Responsibilities:

The Product Delivery Lead Software Engineer will have technical oversight responsibilities for a key asset within the Product Delivery Portfolio. Responsibilities include:

  • Lead requirements capturing exercises, understanding the “what” and “why” from a business perspective before figuring out technology “how”. Partner with internal and external technical teams to understand and influence the appropriate menu of technologies and tools to be used for solution delivery efforts.
  • Provide deliverables like standard definitions, reference models and architecture designs (focused on detailed design principles, detailed APIs, major systems and dependencies between business and IT) to help the architecture review board assess the impact of new and ongoing technology investment on the business and IT estate.
  • Analyze the business-IT environment (run, grow and transform the business) to detect critical deficiencies, legacy, and technical debt, and recommend solutions for improvement.
  • Facilitate the evaluation and selection of software product standards and services, as well as the design of standard and custom software configurations.
  • Support product managers in product decisions to maintain, refresh or retire products, services, or systems (including applications, technologies, processes, and information). Work closely with the product owners and product managers to ensure a robust architectural runway that can support future business requirements throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Provide Tier 3 support to application support service management resources at service providers and Lilly’s offshore Product Delivery support staff.

Key Requirements:

Front-End: Participate in the estimation of activities, own and advise others of the technical implementation of the tasks including design, build, and unit integration testing for new and modified features. Front-End experience will ensure a keen focus to detail to ensure the UX direction and design is implemented through code, and the user’s experience is fluid on multiple devices.

Knowledge and experience with:

  • Modern web application frameworks such as Vue.js, React and associated plugins and frameworks
  • JavaScript engineering using Node.js with associated frameworks such as Express and integrating with JSON/Swagger based micro-service APIs
  • Java
  • Typescript
  • Foundational UX/UI design principles, trends, and tools such as Sketch, InVision, or Adobe Creative Suite and experience consuming high-fidelity designs from UX designers
  • Driving data-driven user testing and UX testing
  • Development frameworks including Apache Struts and AJAX
  • Eclipse IDE
  • Business Objects reports design and build

Back-End: Participate in the estimation of activities, owns and advises others of the technical implementation of tasks including design, build, and unit integration testing for new/modified features. Back-end development experience will ensure a keen focus to detail to ensure the architecture, logic, and information needs are implemented through code.

Knowledge and experience with:

  • Node.js with Typescript and Postgres experience.
  • .NET technologies
  • Experience with Amazon Web Services (s3, API Gateway, CloudFront, ECS, Lambda, ec2, SQS, SNS, StepFunctions, Elastic Search). CloudFormation, AWS CodePipeline and Codebuild.
  • Fluent with SQL and NoSQL databases such as PostgreSQL, RDS Serverless, DynamoDB.
  • Experience with database (DDL, DML, Queries, Joins, Stored Procedures etc).
  • Bash scripting.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in an IT-related discipline
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in IT-related roles
  • Experience delivering systems with multiple points of integration with other technologies or applications
  • Strong teamwork, self-management, problem-solving abilities. Excellent oral and written communication skills

Additional Skills:

  • Knowledge of various aspects of an enterprise technology architecture like business, information, data, network, and security. Knowledge of information principles and processes
  • Understanding and knowledge of system development life cycle methodologies (such as waterfall, agile software development, rapid prototyping, and DevSecOps)
  • Understanding and knowledge of IT service management (ITSM) and Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL)
  • Excellent analytical, planning, organizational and technical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work with developers in-house and in an outsourced environment.
  • Understanding of infrastructure and network architectures
  • Skilled at influencing, guiding, and facilitating stakeholders and peers with decision making
  • Ability to articulate new ideas and concepts to technical and nontechnical audiences
  • Ability to understand the long-term ("big picture") and short-term perspectives of situations
  • Experience working in an Agile environment
  • Experience with DevSecOps tools, technologies, and processes
