Job Description

Organization Overview: Eli Lilly and Company is hiring Thought Leader Liaisons (TLLs) for a newly forming gastroenterology customer strategy and execution team.  This is an exciting chance to initiate the TLL role in a new therapeutic area within Lilly’s immunology group while working for a company with a well-established footprint across multiple other therapeutic areas.

The initial TLLs will build new relationships with external experts as we establish our thought leader and peer-to-peer (P2P) strategies.  The TLLs will work closely with the U.S. brand marketing team in support of Lilly’s external HCP engagement. This will be a dynamic role and will evolve over time to meet or HCP customers’ needs.

We are looking for someone with strong expertise in gastroenterology (inflammatory bowel disease), who is passionate about making life better for patients, eager to be a part of building a new therapeutic team and motivated to work in fast paced environment.


The Thought Leader Liaison (TLL) is a field-based role responsible for thought leader engagement and P2P education within Lilly’s portfolio of therapies in Gastroenterology from prelaunch to commercialization, including line extensions. This role closely partners with the Gastroenterology Customer Strategy Lead Senior Director to develop and manage educational engagement strategies for Gastroenterologists, Advanced Practice Providers (Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants), and Key Office Staff (KOS) across inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) including: ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, and other potential indications. This role has internal and external facing components. Internally, this job requires strong cross-functional skills to partner with brand teams, medical, compliance, external vendors, and others in the development, implementation, and execution of the P2P and Congress strategy.  Externally, this job includes interaction and support of contracted thought leaders (faculty and advisors) on a regular basis as well as at Gastroenterology Congresses. All interactions must be consistent with commercial compliance, regulatory, and legal guidelines. Encompassing a variety of focus areas, it is vital the TLL has a strong scientific background, attention to detail and the ability to adeptly manage many projects simultaneously. Responsibilities include:

Commercial Thought Leader Engagement and Faculty Support (50%)

Identification, development, and ongoing evaluation of 30-40 Gastroenterology Thought Leaders (TLs), including HCPs and Key Office Staff, within a specified geographic area
Evaluate, coach and support speakers by interacting with each faculty member within your region at least 6x year virtually or live
Annual assessment of faculty size, including addition and removal of faculty members, ensuring Lilly has a diverse faculty to best meet the audiences’ needs
Respond quickly to faculty inquiries by providing relevant information
Responsible for annual brand and compliance training of all speakers including: live trainings, virtual evening trainings and one-off trainings to ensure clinical aptitude and podium prowess of the faculty when delivering P2P educational and promotional content
Partner with Faculty Administration and Veeva Digital Engagements to manage speaker compensation capacity, annual speaker contracting and any potential speaker violations
Support cross-functional collaboration for thought leader engagement across Brand Teams, Payer, Medical, Global and Senior Leadership
Regularly attend key regional and national Gastroenterology Congresses (20+ meetings per year) to assess opportunities and evolve the Lilly brand strategy with HCP attendees, contracted faculty, Lilly teammates and Congress staff
Provide support for brand sponsored Product Theater(s) and disease state education at Congresses
Create partnerships with state and national alliances within a defined region, including organized medical groups
Coordinate TL engagements with Lilly Brand and Senior Leadership attendees at Congresses and 1:1 interactions to further our Next Generational Thought Leader Engagement Plan
Attend competitor presentations and provide ideas and resources to the brand teams; collect and deliver effective feedback to the Centralized Congress Team to improve future execution
Engagement and Brand Strategy Development (30%)

Capture insights and provide input into the brand teams to create positive customer experiences that compliantly differentiates Lilly from the competition in the P2P and Congress channels. Work with the brand teams to develop the P2P content and key messages elements; provide input from an external perspective as part of the annual Customer Planning and Business Planning processes
Virtually attend weekly brand meetings to provide feedback on marketplace developments, TL engagements, P2P implementation, and Congress execution.
Support TL engagement and create request for services (RFSs) for any brand-related needs (e.g., videos, national sales meeting presentations, trainings, creation of resources, etc.)
Recommend and monitor key insights for each brand in partnership with Lilly Market Research
Creative Content Development: Help develop complementary and innovative P2P educational strategies and initiatives for compliant promotional education (modalities of P2P, invitations, digital Congress needs, P2P surveys, etc.) by collaborating with cross functional partners including brand teams, medical, advocacy, and payer
Sales Force: Develop vision for the sales force with P2P educational initiatives and ensure compliant execution of tactics; provide P2P/Congress updates on district calls when requested. Create sales meeting workshop content aligned with the sales vision and goals. 
Create and gain appropriate approval for internal and contracted faculty/advisors communications (FCAP)
Provide training to new and ongoing to experienced sales reps on P2P procedures and strategic use of programming
Oversee logistics, introductions, and brand discussions by securing Thought Leaders for sales meetings or trainings

Training/Operations Support (20%)

Complete clinical product and disease state training
Complete all required marketing, thought leader engagement and advising Internal Training Plans (ITPs), including Smart Start training for new marketers.
Become proficient on important marketing internal systems including Centralized Payment System (CPS), Customer Program Portal (CPP) and Veeva Vault PromoMats (VVMP)
Complete annual Red Book Training
Provide data analytics and tracking for districts on programming trends, budget allocation, and speaker utilization when requested
Provide communication to the sales force when necessary
Maintain relationship with agency/external vendor partner(s) along with day-to-day relationships with internal business partners
Risk Management: Responsible for understanding, implementing, and adhering to company policies, processes, and external obligations


Bachelor’s Degree
7-10 years of industry experience (gastroenterology strongly preferred, specialty or immunology sales experience required) with demonstrated leadership and customer facing results as well as experience working with thought leaders


Consistent demonstration of the performance management leadership behaviors relevant to senior director role (e.g., previous DSM, P5 or other leadership experience)
Prior P4 Marketing or Thought Leader Liaison experience
Excellent oral and written communication skills; able to communicate clearly and succinctly with team members and thought leaders
High clinical aptitude for complex biologic promotion
Strong problem-solving skills; able to recognize problems before they become serious and take corrective action
Excellent self-management and organizational skills; able to manage workload and adjust priorities
Effective teamwork skills; able to adapt to diverse interpersonal styles
Prior launch experience
Expertise with US affiliate marketing materials approval processes (PCA, FCAP)
Experience with agencies / external partner vendors
Lilly currently anticipates that the base salary for this position could range from between $132,750 to $221,250 and will depend, in part, on the successful candidate’s qualifications for the role, including education and experience. Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance). In addition, Lilly offers a comprehensive benefit program to eligible employees, including eligibility to participate in a company-sponsored 401(k); pension; vacation benefits; eligibility for medical, dental, vision and prescription drug benefits; flexible benefits (e.g., healthcare and/or dependent day care flexible spending accounts); life insurance and death benefits; certain time off and leave of absence benefits; and well-being benefits (e.g., employee assistance program, fitness benefits, and employee clubs and activities).Of course, the compensation described above is subject to change and could be higher or lower than the range described above. Position requires approximately 30-50% domestic travel, including evening and weekend work
Located near a Midwest hub airport is recommended
