The Elanco Fermentation Technology Center supports corporate goals for enhancing innovation and improving productivity through high throughput screening of bacterial cultures and fermentation process development with the goal of improved production of microbial products. The available role is a position of technical excellence serving Elanco fermentation development and manufacturing. Using their experience of modern techniques in molecular genetics, microbial physiology and fermentation process development, the incumbent will be responsible for applying these tools in the development of improved microbial strains and fermentation processes. The scientist will interact closely with other team members and will be an integral part of multidisciplinary teams that provide support for product and process development, as well as discovery, manufacturing and quality control.
  • Provide technical support, especially with regard to molecular biology, to ongoing strain and process improvement activities; act as a consultant and partner to other senior scientists; provide overall technical influence for fermentation process development and strain improvement for Elanco fermentation products and technical and scientific leadership to the department.
  • Develop and implement tools and techniques for high-throughput genetic engineering and screening of various Streptomyces sp, including those used for industrial production.
  • Develop genome scale metabolic models using –omics data, fermentation data and mathematical modeling to select a broad array of targets for strain improvement.
  • Lead the design and execution of strategic initiatives leading to the integration of emerging biochemical and molecular biological techniques into the existing strain and process development efforts to better achieve the group’s mission.
  • Participate in and/or lead cross-functional process development teams, and effectively collaborate with other groups in TS/MS, Bioprocess and Bioproduct Development, Discovery, and Manufacturing.
  • Keep abreast of relevant scientific literature/new technologies/capabilities and regulatory initiatives/requirements. Lead implementation, as appropriate.
  • Provide both internal and external influence.
  • Timely authorship of technical reports.
  • Ensure work is aligned with all relevant development quality, regulatory, HSE, GLP and GMP requirements.
  • Minimum of 2 years hands-on experience with Streptomyces species, including but not limited to S. aureofaciens and S. cinnamonensis
  • PhD, or Master of Science degree with 5 years experience in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Genetic Engineering, Metabolic Engineering or Chemical Engineering
  • Demonstrated knowledge of microbial physiology, genetics, molecular biology, and fermentation with an emphasis on genetic manipulation of Streptomyces spp using modern tools like CRISPR.
  • Demonstrated experience in the use of –omics technologies (genomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics) and genome scale metabolic modeling.
  • Demonstrated experience in the fields of strain and fermentation process development.
  • Demonstrated experience using aseptic techniques.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills.
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills, self-management, task planning and organization.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, as well as demonstrated ability to collaborate with and influence teams.
  • Basic knowledge of cGMP/GLP compliance requirements
