Basic Qualifications :

  • PhD (or MS +10 years relevant experience) in Organic or Medicinal Chemistry or similar scientific area with 5+ years demonstrated experience in small molecule drug discovery.

Do you have strong Organic Chemistry skills with deep and extensive working knowledge of modern synthetic chemistry methodologies, experimental work, isolation/purification techniques and structural analysis of synthetic organic molecules? The Discovery Chemistry Research and Technologies division of Eli Lilly is seeking experienced researcher with a strong background in Synthetic and Medicinal Chemistry and Drug Discovery, with excellent communication skills, and with the ability to work well in our Team Lilly environment. Success in this role will involve:

  • Keep safety as your top priority at all time, striving to drive a constantly improving safety culture.
  • Formulate hypotheses; design and synthesize novel small molecules to engage disease modifying targets and contribute conclusively to the advancement of drug discovery programs from early lead generation to submission of candidate drugs to the clinic.
  • Apply world-class structure-based drug design technologies and partner with expert colleagues in computational chemistry and biophysics to characterize protein-ligand interactions and gain key insights supporting de-novo molecular design.
  • Optimize lead compounds to improve potency, selectivity, physicochemical properties and ADMET to meet the target product profiles required to invent high-quality medicines.
  • Collaborate with colleagues specialized in high-throughput automated synthesis, route optimization and scale-up to improve the overall efficiency and productivity of the group.
  • Proactively interact across functions and geographies to collaborate with scientists in areas like pharmacology, translational science, ADME and toxicology, and Legal to address specific program needs, increase your overall intuition for business and provide them with Medicinal Chemistry perspectives.

Additional Skills/Preferences :

  • Medicinal Chemistry expertise in pharmaceutical, biotechnology or academic environments, with demonstrated knowledge of the following domains of Drug Discovery will be highly valued:
    • Lead optimization to improve properties of compounds, in vitro and in vivo potency, selectivity, ADMET properties.
    • Current understanding of ligand binding efficiency, energetics, and how to optimize.
    • Biophysical techniques such as X-ray crystallography.
    • Computational chemistry tools and methods
    • Automated Synthesis.
  • Ability to maintain awareness of the latest literature of chemical transformations.
  • Robust track record of scientific contributions including peer reviewed publications, presentations, and patents.
  • Excellent English language oral and written communication skills; organizational and record retention skills.
  • Demonstrated success mentoring junior team members.
  • Effective leadership and successful cross-functional partnering on drug discovery projects
  • Enthusiastic and proactive, with the skills vital to operate effectively in a fast-paced multidisciplinary environment with flexibility and an adaptable approach to goal delivery.
  • Scientific ingenuity and ability to conceptualize independently and in teams solving problems through thoughtful hypothesis creation, experimental design, analysis of complex data sets, and mechanism-of-action insight.
  • Excellent teammate, attention to detail, problem solving skills, a high level of learning dexterity, the ability to work within a global organization, and perform in a flexible workforce.
  • Command of informatics and data visualization tools (e.g. TIBCO Spotfire, KNIME) to undertake computationally enabled multi-property optimization approaches.
  • Ability to build and/or lead projects and initiatives, coordinating multiple scientific activities and team members simultaneously across various sites.
