The Engineering Technology Center (ETC)  is a group of skilled engineering practitioners who possess deep technical expertise.  The primary role of this position is to provide process and pressure safety related technical support to manufacturing.   The ETC partners with manufacturing and other engineers across the company to deliver capital projects, address operational issues, and provides solutions to key business problems across the company.


This role is the Process Safety Management technical resource in the ETC.  

  • Own the Pressure Safety program Become a key engineering/technical resource for the GIPSM processes across Lilly such as Mechanical Integrity, Process hazards, and others.
  • Be the corporate technical resource on pressure relief hazards.
  • Provide internal capability to calculate or evaluate pressure relief system sizing.
  • Recommend external resources for evaluation and sizing of emergency pressure relief systems.
  • Review third party evaluations of pressure relief system design.
  • Manage and track the technical aspect of the emergency pressure relief program. 
  • Teach Pressure relief training courses for all learners who need the course
  • Become engineering resource on key GPSIM processes such as Mechanical Integrity, Process hazards reviews, process hazard evaluations, etc.
  • Partner with GHSE on technical solutions for safety related trends and ownership of key GHSE standards and expectations
  • Partner with LRL colleagues on ensuring process safety related aspects are considered when developing new processes, products.

Emergency Pressure Relief Program

  • Monitors and reports emergency pressure relief remediation across all sites.
  • Ensures emergency pressure relief requirements are successfully executed on major capital projects
  • Emergency Pressure Relief Technical Resource
  • Answers and resolves technical questions from the sites and capital projects.
  • Leads the two corporate Emergency Pressure Relief training courses:
  • EN21507 Pressure Safety Awareness
  • 437809  Common  Pressure Relief Calculations
  • Master Specifications relating to Pressure relief and Process Safety
  • Author/own and update the respective Master Specifications.   Will maintain assigned Master Specifications  including review of exception requests and periodic reviews with selected vendors/contractors to ensure Lilly specifies economically efficient
  • Process Safety resource for the ETC by becoming engineering aspects owner for Mechanical Integrity, Process hazards review, Process hazards analysis and overall GIPSM program liaison with GHSE.


  • Flexibility in adapting and adjusting to changes in working practices and willingness to take on different roles as required by the needs of the Engineering Tech Center
  • Ability to work with diverse perspectives and to identify and resolve issues with minimal direction.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS in Engineering (e.g. Chemical Engineering)

  • Minimum 10 years experience in pharmaceutical and/or specialty chemical laboratory and/or manufacturing environments
  • Must have demonstrated good written and verbal communications skills. Demonstrated ability to work within and lead diverse, multi-functional teams (i.e. Engineering, Manufacturing Operations leadership, TS/MS, etc.).
  • Demonstrated project management, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to identify and resolve issues with minimal direction.
  • Must be able to work in an environment where limited or conflicting direction is given.
  • Qualified to perform emergency relief calculations.
  • Knowledgeable of first principles.

Additional Preferences:

  • Professional engineering license.
  • Experience as a mechanical or process engineering in two or more of the following  areas: small molecule bulk, large molecule bulk, dry products, parenteral products, delivery devices, utilities, facilities management, Lilly Research.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of US and non-US codes and standards applicable to emergency pressure relief.
