Job Description

Within Lilly Research Laboratories, Synthetic Molecule Design and Development (SMDD) is involved in key activities for the development of synthetic active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) from pre-clinical phases through commercialization of drug substances and drug products. Our chemists, engineers, and scientists develop key technical and business solutions across the portfolio using their deep technical expertise to accelerate testing of the clinical hypothesis and overall drug development. SMDD delivers on these responsibilities by recognizing diverse talent and cultures are vital to bring the next generation of life changing medicines to patients.

Our team is looking for creative candidates to contribute to our synthetic molecule route design and development portfolio as core member of our automation and high-throughput experimentation (HTE) laboratory. Candidates will be able to use automation to contribute to the design of novel chemical processes and mechanism-based problem solving as part of portfolio driven goals.

Responsibilities:

Top candidates for this position will be expected to:

  • Contribute to a healthy, supportive work culture and maintain a highly organized laboratory area with a strong focus on all aspects of chemical and occupational safety.

  • Be a core member of SMDD’s high-throughput experimentation (HTE) laboratory. Use our existing infrastructure to assist process development by screening reaction and separation conditions in conjunction with project teams.

  • Engage in the design and implementation of HTE screens as requested by project teams.

  • Partner with similar SMDD internal capabilities such as automated crystallization and salt screening to deliver comprehensive molecule and process understanding.

  • Use and maintain specialized lab equipment such as solid and liquid handlers, UPLC-MS and glove boxes. Mechanical proficiency and willingness to interact with vendors is strongly preferred.

  • Possess a robust background and training in modern synthetic chemistry and be able to use this knowledge along with robotics to accelerate new solutions to the most important scientific problems often in time constrained scenarios.

  • Contribute to the design of novel chemical processes and mechanism-based problem solving as part of project and portfolio driven goals including the synthesis of complex molecules and development of novel methodologies. It is expected that examples of these aspects will be reflected in a strong publication record in peer reviewed journals.

  • Demonstrate learning agility in grasping and exploiting new scientific concepts and methods across disciplines and apply these findings to small molecule, peptide and oligonucleotide assets.

  • Actively engage in the development of new synthetic routes for the manufacture of active pharmaceutical ingredients using the most modern technologies, including continuous processing, automated reaction screening, and computational chemistry.

  • Manage, analyze, and present data concisely and efficiently to drive innovation and meet project timeline.

Basic Qualifications:

  • MS degree in synthetic organic chemistry or related field or BS with at least 5 years of industrial experience in chemistry and/or automation.

  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities especially in a team environment

  • Good interpersonal skills and a persistent tendency for collaboration; excellent ability to communicate and understand customer expectations

  • Demonstrated self-initiative and appropriate risk-taking

  • Sustained technical proficiency and integration of complex scientific concepts to create technical agendas that supply business value

  • Ability to prioritize multiple activities and manage ambiguity

  • An active scientific curiosity and interest for complementary disciplines within the pharmaceutical industry

  • Attention to detail and an ability to diagnose problems

  • Good ability to use Excel, PowerBI and other software for managing and viewing data

  • Knowledge of and experience using analytical techniques such as NMR and LC-MS.

  • This is a lab based role

  • Potential exposure to chemicals, allergens and loud noises

  • Travel: 0 to 10%
