Are you passionate and driven to unite science and technology to accelerate therapeutics’ drug discovery and development?  Are you motivated to work at the intersection of engineering and biology as we perturb human biology from a range of modalities (small, antibody, peptibody and genetic medicines) to make lives better for patients in neuroscience and pain?  As we experience an unprecedented wave of converging innovation in biology and machine learning, the Research Information and Digital Solutions (RIDS) organization within Lilly Information and Digital Solutions seeks a talented engineer who will work across Lilly Research Labs (LRL) to analyze and lead platform solution development for our neuroscience and pain therapeutic areas. Specifically, this individual will lead with their engineering mindset to analyze stakeholder needs across therapeutic areas and deliver well-architected patterns and solutions for enabling therapeutics discovery.  As a hands-on platform and solutions engineer, He/She/They will partner with internal stakeholders to use state-of-the-art engineering approaches to deliver domain specific platforms and capabilities. This role will lead technical solution development and initiatives, supporting research scientists with the implementation and application of a variety of tools and technologies.  All new efforts leverage Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Azure Cloud based platforms for solution delivery.  

Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical leadership and strategic direction for product and service planning through a broad understanding of genetics, genetic analysis tools, analytics and integration technologies, primarily in the cloud. Strong focus around the intersection of emerging technology in computing and human biology.
  • Translate customer needs through user interviews and lead collaboration with multidisciplinary teams (i.e., Scientist, data engineering, product integration, computational biology, software) to buy, build, deploy, integrate, and deliver platforms and solutions for therapeutics discovery and development.
  • Lead and deliver well architected engineering solutions for our neuroscience and pain therapeutic areas.
  • Design the LRL system architecture for data capture, analysis, and visualization solutions.
  • Work as a platform team lead to develop and deliver technical capabilities using agile development processes including building data and workflow pipelines and creative web applications and visualizations for complex multi-modal datasets.
  • Represent the services across Research and IDS (Information Digital Solutions) and drive our robust capabilities both on premise and via cloud providers such as AWS and Azure, by building on a solid understanding of the integration points with applications, platforms, network infrastructure, and other capabilities.
  • Partner with infrastructure, solution delivery, and Information Management capability teams to architect and deliver current and future solutions.
  • Advocate for and lead open-source efforts for Lilly Research IDS.

Basic Requirements:

  • B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or other quantitative discipline with at least 10 years of equivalent experience and/or a Masters’ Degree in a technical discipline with at least 6 years of experience.
  • Practical experience building, evaluating, scaling, and deploying data and machine learning pipelines with Python, with Amazon Web Services and/or Azure Cloud technology.
  • Proficient in R, Python and fluent in data manipulation (SQL, Spark, Pandas).
  • Experience implementing proprietary and open-source languages, software and platforms, machine and deep learning frameworks and toolkits with a focus around analysis of genomic, genetic and biomarker data (e.g., WDL, DNANexus, Hail.is, Domino Data Sciences).
  • Experience with writing enterprise level code to process, transport, analyze, and store data within SQL and NoSQL databases.
  • Experience with Docker, CI/CD pipelines, and Git version control.

Additional Preferences:

  • Knowledge of accelerated compute (GPU, TPU, ASIC).
  • Basic familiarity with quantum computing and/or willingness to learn.
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills (ability to assess problems, suggest solutions, gain solution support, and implement solutions).
  • High learning agility for technology and business processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships, influence peers, and achieve results through others.
  • Strong understanding of Linux and Windows operating systems.
  • Ability to understand project information, integration, analytics, and technical solutions and define project specific architectures that accelerate capability delivery.
  • Strong teamwork, self-management, problem-solving abilities.
  • Advanced knowledge of database concepts, practices, methods, principles, and a comprehensive understanding of evolving industry trends and standards, including analytics applications and their supporting architectural requirements.
  • Demonstrated versatility in technical leadership, project management, and systems/software development and implementation.
  • Familiarity with multiple design, construction, version control, and testing tools.
  • Ability to deliver results through others, particularly by building productive relationships, and being an effective team member or business partner.
  • Experience working with teams across organizational and geographic boundaries and multiple levels in the organization.
  • Position may be located in Indiana, Cambridge, MA or San Diego, CA
