Position Brand Description: 

The Automation/Infrastructure Engineer has a primary and secondary role in IDM engineering.  The primary role is to own the development, deployment, and operation of the IT-related automation infrastructure of IDM engineering, including PI Data Historian, source code control systems, software license systems, cybersecurity, and others.   The secondary role of this position is to be a member of engineering teams delivering device assembly lines to contract  manufacturers and Lilly sites globally.  In addition, when primary support teams for the global installed base (CMO and Lilly sites) require assistance, this role may provide assistance or leadership in returning lines to service or optimizing lines.  This engineer will develop and implement best practices for designing assembly line automation systems to produce data that will help to optimize the lines, speed startup, and remain compliant with cGMPs dealing with data, and will create reports to optimize operations.


Key Objectives / Deliverables:

For Infrastructure role dealing with Historian:

  • Form working relationships with the contracted resources and manufacturing site stakeholders globally
  • Assume role of IDM engineering representative in the highly leveraged implementation team; represent IDM’s interest in the team; assure final design is maintainable and meets requirements
  • Post installation, assume role of custodian and continue to optimize the business value of Historian

For Infrastructure role dealing with source control and network architecture:

  • Working with senior engineers in IDM and with our OEMs and CMs, establish effective source control infrastructure and processes as needed for project execution and for contract manufacturers over the long term
  • Work with senior engineers in IDM to establish and maintain standardized network architecture at our CMs.

For assembly line delivery role:

  • Provide technical assessment of OEM technical proposals and make recommendations as to OEM suitability
  • Manage the generation rationalization of user requirements for each project
  • Define and mitigate technical and patient risks, including use of FMEA
  • Assure each design includes maximum appropriate re-use of technology from prior projects
  • Oversee the OEM’s design process, assuring questions are resolved and barriers to progress are removed
  • Conduct thorough design reviews to assure the design meets requirements and local/corporate standards
  • Characterize unit operations and set operating conditions as required by defining an Engineering Studies Plan, developing rigorous studies are executing them

Assure testing is appropriately developed and is in accordance with the risk level of the item being tested:

  • Document research and investigations as technical reports
  • Find and document opportunities to optimize line performance, leveraging the capital to generate more value
  • Continually find ways to improve the process of delivering assembly assets, revising or creating guidance documents, SOPs or best practices

Minimum Qualification:

  • BS in Engineering
  • 2 years of experience in automation networks applied to machine controls and implementing and managing IT-related automation assets such as OSI Data Historian and other server-based systems (others may apply).

Additional Skills:

  • Experience in capital project delivery
  • Experience with Medical Device assembly
  • Experience with engineering in a regulated pharmaceutical environment/cGMPs/Commissioning and Qualification
  • Experience programming control systems for high-speed assembly lines or packaging lines
  • Ability to lead and influence across organizational and company boundaries; ability to form relationships with others not in your organization
  • Experience with DOE, GR&R, Statistical methods as applied to engineering studies and reports
  • Experience in large capital project delivery and management of sub-projects within a larger project
  • Expertise in automation networks, vision systems for part inspection, debugging of assembly lines
  • Expertise in process data historian configuration and/or use

Additional Information :

  • Ability to travel 25% on average, with peak over 50% for a few months at a time
