Position summary

The Enterprise Cloud Architect will influence and manage the landscape of the Lilly cloud technologies and capabilities for Lilly Information & Digital Solutions (IDS) including AWS, Azure, and other associated IaaS and PaaS cloud technologies.  The Enterprise Cloud Architect is responsible for researching industry innovations and trends, understanding business use cases, and ensuring Lilly has the appropriate technological capability to capitalize on those business opportunities.  This role will also be responsible for setting cloud technology direction, establishing patterns and standards, and ensuring security objectives are met through partnership with the Lilly Information Security organization.  The Enterprise Cloud Architect will report directly to the Senior Director of Enterprise Infrastructure Services and will have a dotted-line relationship to the Senior Director of Enterprise Architecture to align the cloud and enterprise architecture visions.

Primary Responsibilities and Activities

Research and Understand Technology Trends

  • Evaluate new cloud technologies to determine business value for Lilly. Provide practical advice and best practices to overcome these challenges and successfully deliver the expected business outcomes.  Contextualize the technology trends based on social, economic, political, and other nontechnology trends.

  • Keeps abreast of new cloud technology and technological trends across Lilly IDS.

  • Align research to business needs and technology strategies across the functions

Lead our Cloud Architecture Vision

  • Develop the long-term cloud vision, direction, and roadmaps for Lilly’s enterprise cloud

  • Work to understand cloud technology needs to define innovative solutions that fulfill our strategy

  • Map cloud technology needs to capabilities to build technology roadmaps, drive rationalization, locate ways to reduce costs in IT

  • Identify dependencies and impact of key technologies to develop strategic roadmaps for Cloud Services

Governance and architecture operations

  • Collaborate closely with the Enterprise Architecture organization and the Global Information Services (GIS) lead architect to establish and drive an aligned enterprise architecture vision and roadmap.

  • Participate as a key and influential member of Enterprise Architecture governance

  • Partner with the Director of Cloud Engineering in the cloud architecture governance body to triage new technology requests and ensure Enterprise Architecture alignment and identify gaps in cloud architecture and design.

  • Document and communicate cloud procedures, standards, and frameworks

  • Drive timely management of technology lifecycle needs across the cloud portfolio and communicate impact to the business IT functions

Reference Architecture

  • Own and lead the development and evolution of cloud reference architectures, patterns and implementation frameworks in collaboration with other technology domain architects within and across information technology groups.

  • Create materials for alignment and education. Steward the communications

  • Promote the adoption and lifecycle management of key technologies represented in the reference model.

  • Establish operational procedures for utilization of reference architectures and report on KPIs to assess business value.

Provide Cloud Architecture Guidance

  • Align with applicable Local Architects and make recommendations to stakeholders about new technologies and trends.

  • Make architecture recommendations based on experience, knowledge of use cases, objectives, and industry learnings

  • Work with and help project teams align their solutions with the cloud architectural vision as well as the Enterprise Architecture standards.

  • Identify organizational requirements for the resources, structures, and cultural changes necessary to support the IDS cloud architecture

  • Work closely with Automation Architect to ensure solutions leverage automation capabilities

Community and Education

  • Encourage, promote, and enable adoption; Maximize value derived from cloud tech by increasing knowledge across IDS of cloud capabilities and how to maximize the services and technologies. Expose and overcome barriers.

  • Educate and share across the IDS Community to promote best practices and awareness of cloud technology strategies.  

  • Mentor other cloud technologists to grow technical staff knowledgeable of Lilly technology expectations and existing offerings

Basic Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in an IT discipline (computer science, information systems, or related field.)

  • A minimum of 5 years of in-depth experience in designing, implementing, and supporting AWS and/or Azure cloud solutions.

Additional Skills and Preferences

  • Exposure and understanding of existing, new and emerging cloud technologies

  • Demonstrated influence, communication, presentation, and facilitation skills.

  • Strong leadership and analytical skills

  • Ability to challenge appropriately and motivate others.

  • Ability to assess rapidly changing technologies and apply them to business needs.

  • Experience working in a variety of architecture roles (e.g., enterprise, solution, tooling, integration, data, and infrastructure

  • Experience working with modern architectures (e.g., automation, cloud-based, microservices-based) in a DevOps environment

  • Demonstrated experience working with regulatory policies and procedures

  • Experience working in pharma / life sciences

  • Familiarity with agile/scrum, DevOps, IT services management, infrastructure and operations, and EA and ITIL frameworks

  • Ability to balance the long-term (or "big picture") and short-term implications of individual decisions

  • Have a track record of remaining unbiased toward specific technologies or vendors

  • Display intellectual curiosity and integrity
