Responsibilities:

Elanco Animal Health is looking for a structural bioinformatics scientist to join a growing interdisciplinary global informatics team. The ideal candidate will possess broad knowledge of molecular modeling tools and techniques and will work both as a project consultant and as a thought leader for discovery biology teams in vaccines, enzymes, and biotherapeutics. The primary technical focus will be development and application of structural bioinformatics and molecular modeling solutions to support both early development of biotherapeutic products. This position sits in the computational sciences hub of the Elanco Research Labs, a multi-disciplinary core focused on discovery and early phase (pre-clinical) research programs. In this role, you will be expected to:


  • Apply sequence analysis, structure modeling, and molecular dynamics approaches to analyze and predict biophysical properties and other structure-property relationships of proteins
  • Collaborate with protein engineers and other biophysical scientists to support structure-based design of therapeutic peptides, proteins, and antibodies
  • Develop computational strategies to guide the design of biotherapeutics with improved biological properties and developability characteristics
  • Acquire or develop computational tools for predicting liabilities and biophysical properties that impact biopharmaceutical product safety and developability
  • Implement or support informatics solutions for molecule registration, protein engineering and production workflows, and data distribution and analysis
  • Perform structure prediction activities on peptides, proteins, protein-ligand and protein-protein complexes (homology modeling, threading, ab initio modeling)
  • Use structure data to identify and characterize binding and active sites
  • Participate in the development of protein engineering methodologies
  • Develop and apply computational strategies for optimization of biotherapeutics
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external collaborators
  • Attend and present your work at scientific conferences
  • Actively participate in global communities of practice at Elanco

  • Ph.D. in relevant life sciences or computational sciences domain (e.g. molecular biology, bioinformatics, structural biology, chemistry, physics, computer science) or related Scientific Discipline
  • 3 years experience ( experience can be under PhD work completion) with protein modeling tools for structure prediction, visualization, and dynamic simulation and principles of protein structure and structure-function relationships (understanding of principles of protein engineering will be highly valued)
  • 3 years postgraduate experience preferred
  • Familiarity with experimental & empirical approaches (ideally high throughput) for testing computational protein predictions (i.e. must be able to interface with these experimental teams).
  • Experience in development and application of molecular dynamics methods, and familiarity with common software platforms (e.g. GROMACS)
  • Experience with common workflow automation, scripting, and programming platforms (e.g. KNIME, Python, C++)
  • Ability to work as an independent contributor/consultant on global, interdisciplinary teams driving biopharmaceuticals research
  • Ability to work closely with colleagues in genomics, bioinformatics, cheminformatics, data analytics, and scientific computing to develop and implement long-term informatics strategies in key functional areas
  • Programming/scripting expertise as required for developing and optimizing computational methods, workflow automation, and data analysis
  • A record of scientific leadership and innovation as demonstrated by publications, presentations, and/or patents
  • Ability to travel globally up to 10% of the time
