This role will involve proactively managing and overseeing the legal risk profile for key segments of the North American business including complex commercial transactions, contract drafting and negotiation, litigation management, advertisement reviews and disputes, distribution counseling, formation and assessment of business strategies and implementation of legal controls in growing business.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Provides business-oriented leadership, strategic advice, proactive and effective day-to-day legal support and counsel at all levels of the business on a wide variety of legal issues while ensuring strategies, programs, policies, practices and initiatives comply with laws.
  2. Handles complex and sensitive assignments; recommends effective strategies and tactics; advises on legal rights, obligations and privileges. Makes recommendations to management in making important decisions in relation to legal ramifications.
  3. Member of and participates in various Elanco business teams/committees where responsible for advising on legal and business issues.
  4. Reviews and approves (from a legal perspective) marketing, advertising, promotional and regulatory materials and correspondence, public statements and press releases.
  5. Develops policies and procedures for the Legal function. Advises on legal aspects of Company’s Ethics and Compliance policies, programs and procedures.
  6. Provides training to management and business groups on relevant/new legal topics and issues.
  • J.D. degree
  • 5+ years experience in general commercial counseling

  • Animal health, pharmaceutical, or related industry experience
  • Demonstrated high level of competency managing complex programs and/or organizations.
  • Strong leadership skills (critical thinking, results oriented, etc.), including a strong reputation for integrity and sound judgment.
  • Ability to translate ambiguity and complexity into a meaningful, actionable framework
  • Strong business acumen and mindset towards collaboration.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively including strong facilitation and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to network internally and externally to influence without authority.
  • Familiarity with, sensitivity to, and willing to embrace international cultural differences.
  • Previous in-house experience on a global basis preferred.
  • High level of professional maturity and sensitivity to confidentiality.
  • Position requires some domestic and international travel.
