As the Environmental Engineer in Fort Dodge, Iowa you will develop and manage the environmental protection programs primarily at the Elanco-Fort Dodge location. The Engineer interprets and communicates regulations, manages the waste management program and waste budget, conducts environmental sampling and audits, gathers/analyzes data to meet the requirements of numerous regulations including RCRA, CWA, CAA and CERCLA/SARA. The Engineer develops and implements environmental programs to address regulations and Corporate directives, and to minimize environmental liabilities.
Prepare compliance reports for federal, state and local regulatory agencies and Elanco Corporate. Work directly with regulatory agencies to negotiate permits. Be the point of contact for on-site inspections and correspondence with environmental inspectors.
Successful regulatory inspections based on number and nature of findings. Reporting deadlines met. Max Plan objectives met or exceeded
Administer the overall waste management program. Guide waste generators and handlers in collection, storage and disposal of wastes to meet federal, state and local regulations while minimizing future liability from disposal of the waste. Create a waste management budget and track waste expenses. Develop SOPs and conduct RCRA waste training for employees. Oversee and/or conduct weekly inspections of 90 day and satellite RCRA accumulation areas. Identify waste reuse, reduction, recycling and handling opportunities to minimize liabilities and maximize efficiencies.
Hazardous waste inspections results and waste generation reports.
Manage air, water and soil quality programs to comply with regulatory and Corporate requirements and minimize environmental liabilities. Evaluate pollution control equipment. Utilize engineering principles to understand processes and to relate the environmental impact of those processes to the regulatory requirements and vice versa. Gather and evaluate discharges and effluent data to verify compliance with permits, support permit applications, determine contaminant sources, develop trending results and/or characterize effluents.
Compliance with permit and regulatory report requirements.
Review, interpret and communicate environmental regulations and Corporate directives to affected departments. Work with departments to implement regulations. Manage and implement site Environmental Management Plan. Maintain SOPs for environmental protection programs. Develop RCRA Contingency Plans, Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures Plans, Waste Minimization Plans, Air Pollution Alert Plans and Storm water Pollution Prevention Plans. Participate in Corporate (CSEC) and regulatory environmental meetings. Assist Engineering Department in development of Corporate "BE Green" program aimed at reducing carbon footprint and enhancing pollution prevention. Develop innovative solutions to meet environmental requirements
Maintenance of updated programs and plans, successful regulatory inspections based on the number and nature of violations
Organize spill response teams for facilities and provide environmental training to those teams. Perform responses to hazardous material incidents commensurate with training. Participate in hazard evaluations of new facilities, processes and equipment to minimize hazards. Perform risk assessments as a daily routine to understand and communicate risks to management and operating departments. Act as the DHS designated submitter and contact person for Homeland Security anti-terrorism issues. Participate in local emergency planning committee functions and hazardous material response teams
Hazard reviews, documented participation in audits and inspections, CSEC and LEPC participation, and documented SOP training
Bachelor's degree in an environmental or engineering related discipline
5+ years of experience in environmental programs management.

Professional environmental registration preferred. Greater than five years of experience in environmental programs management.
Pharmaceutical, food industries, research and development experience preferred.
Skilled with computer equipment and software, and ability to navigate Internet/Intranet to obtain needed information.
Effective oral and written communication with all personnel levels.
Exhibits attention to detail, strong analytical background, understanding of engineering principles, develops solutions towards compliance with regulations, and ability to work independently with a limited level of supervision.
Demonstrated knowledge of environmental regulations understanding the complexity of developing management solutions for environmental issues. Recognize and solve environmental issues on a continuing basis. Fully recognize the impact of immediate and long-term liability resulting from environmental management strategies. OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER training, RCRA hazardous waste training and DOT hazardous materials transportation training.
Ability to work in temperature extremes and hazardous conditions.
Ability to move hazardous materials throughout facility using appropriate ergonomic tools.
Able to work in respiratory protection and other personal protective equipment for hazardous chemical response
