The Lilly Institute for Genetic Medicine located in Cambridge, Massachusetts allows Lilly to explore how next generation therapeutics, emerging technologies, data analytics and new models can improve patient health while reducing the clinical, psychosocial, and economic burden that is systemic throughout healthcare today. The center has been crafted to cultivate collaborative drug, device, and technology research across Lilly’s diverse therapeutic areas.

Our device and delivery team in Cambridge explores and applies new technical solutions with a focus in the following areas:

  • Drug delivery of new therapeutic modalities

  • Novel routes of administration

  • Fundamental understanding of the interplay of the device, anatomy, and physiology

We are seeking a highly motivated, skilled, and creative scientific/engineering professional to contribute to projects that operate at the interface of devices, drug products, and physiology. As the Lilly molecule portfolio in Genetic Medicines expands, our team will complement our molecule and formulation colleagues with engineering expertise to understand how devices and procedures can be designed to optimally deliver genetic medicines via familiar and novel routes of administration.

Our ideal teammate, motivated by curiosity, will explore and contribute to establishing first principles of delivery for new therapeutic modalities such as oligonucleotide-based therapies, shine as an inclusive member of a highly multi-disciplinary environment, and relentlessly pursue creative solutions for patients. They must be an effective collaborator with many different constituents including local team members, Lilly colleagues in Indianapolis, external partners, and industrial and academic collaborators.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Plan and implement delivery and device projects that involve materials, chemistry, and biological expertise in new modalities and novel routes of administration

  • Collaborate with external partners to design and prototype early concepts, processes, and methods to support the delivery strategy, including design and execution of pre-clinical studies

  • Serve as a technical lead for cross-functional project(s) and contribute as a member to internal team projects

  • Connect across Cambridge organizations to ensure device and delivery programs in new modality delivery are integrated with other functions on site and with Indianapolis-based colleagues

  • Understand IP, freedom to operate, and competitive landscape in targeted areas of research

  • Monitor the literature to stay current with latest concepts and developments in device and delivery for key routes of administration

Minimum Requirements:

  • Research experience developing products based on biomaterials, controlled release, or polymer materials concepts

  • Practice hypothesis-driven experimental methods to probe materials/biological interactions

  • PhD with 2 years of experience in Biomedical, Materials, Controlled Release, Colloidal Systems, or Chemical Engineering or related fields preferred. We will consider individuals with a B.S. with 8 years of experience or an M.S. with 5 years of experience who have proven ability to conduct hypothesis-driven research.

Additional Skills/Preferences:

  • Effective technical writing, verbal communication, and presentation skills

  • Desire and ability to coach/mentor early career engineering talent

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to be an inclusive leader/colleague in a highly interdisciplinary environment

  • Familiarity with genetic medicines and physiology

  • Experience designing and performing pre-clinical studies

  • Familiarity with medical device regulatory environment and principles
